Meet Digital Transformation Leader John Nungesser

John Nungesser has been at Star for just over two and a half years. John majored in Molecular Genetics and planned on being a PhD researcher, but after two years of undergrad, he realized that it wasn’t for him. After that, he became interested in biotech sales and moved into marketing and digital strategy. John was in the biotech industry for four years prior to joining the Star team.

What is your favorite book and why?
I do a decent amount of reading, but don’t really have a “favorite” book, as there are very few I’ve re-read. I think one of the most memorable was a collection of the original Sherlock Holmes short stories, as it was fascinating to see how much influence they had on modern-day detective literature and TV shows.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?
Free time? What’s that? Just kidding! I spend a lot of time working around my house. I’ve nailed in flooring, re-done multiple bathrooms (I hate tiling), built a customer fireplace and hearth, and more. I was getting into golf and shooting sporting clays, but my two-month-old son requires a good bit of time.

How do you ensure work safety?
Right now just following the corporate COVID mandates. I also make sure to follow all shop rules regarding PPE and keep my distance when near any active work. Other than that, I mostly sit at a desk.

What is something people may not know about you? Do you have a secret talent?
I used to work on my own cars back in high school and even worked in an auto garage for a bit. I’d love to have a house with a garage large enough to fit a project car. I would love to do a Datsun 240z restomod.

What is your greatest fear?
Trimming my son’s fingernails. They are so small and you can’t un-cut a too-short fingernail! I was really worried about accidentally breaking one of his tiny fingers when getting him into a shirt, but babies are pretty sturdy as it turns out.

Where is your favorite place to be?
A secluded lakehouse with my family. Hands down the best way to relax and enjoy the moment.

Favorite movie line/quote?
Another reason I love Frasier–just packed with epic one-liners such as:
“Abe Lincoln had a brighter future when he picked up his tickets at the box office!”
“If I were using that microscope right now, I still wouldn’t be able to locate my interest in your problem.”
“Copernicus called, and you are not the center of the universe!”
Not since Quasimodo roamed the streets of medieval Paris have so many people uttered the phrase, ‘That poor man.'”

What are three words to describe Star?
Driven, proud, evolving.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?
Buy a weekend car!

What is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
Machu Picchu in Peru–walking through the ruins of an ancient civilization was an indescribable experience.

Who inspires you?
My grandfather, Robert Rowe. He was an excellent businessman, father, and enjoyed life to its fullest.

What do you love the most about the transformation industry?
The layers of complexity that nobody outside of the industry even stops to think about. Prior to Star, I didn’t even know trailer leasing was a thing because tractor-trailer ownership and sourcing models never even crossed my mind. I bought things off of Amazon and it showed up in two days and I didn’t even give it a second thought. Now, I look at every semi-trailer I pass on the freeway.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Easy. Pizza!

What was the first concert you ever attended?
Weezer, but I’ve been to less than ten concerts in my life.

What music genre do you like to listen to?
Rock, classic rock, alternative, classical, oldies, pretty much anything.

Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?
“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” -Sheryl Sandberg

How do you define success?
Being a positive influential leader in both my professional and personal lives through helping to bring out the best in those around me.

If given a chance, who would you want to be/what would you want to do for a day?
The president of the US so I could learn all about the super-classified government secrets.

Dog or cat person?
Dog. I have two dogs, a shepherd mix and a border collie mix.

Favorite tradition?
Every Friday, I make homemade pizza from scratch.

Pineapple pizza… yay or nay?
Not my thing, but I don’t necessarily hate it.

Where are you from?
I spent the first half of my childhood here in Columbus in Linden off Weber Road, then the second half in Gahanna.
