Calvin Allen has been at Star for a little over a year as our Lead Software Engineer but did a six-month consulting contract with Star prior to joining the team full-time. Calvin has been in software development for 15 years, and while he became familiar with a variety of things, over the last ten years he’s focused on web applications.

What do you do at Star?
My official title is Lead Software Engineer, which means I write a lot of code or think about what code I need to write.
What are three words to describe Star?
Driven. Motivated. Safety.
How do you ensure workplace safety?
Driving slowly through the Columbus lot when I’m actually on-site at the office.
What is your favorite TV show? Who’s is your favorite character and why?
Seinfeld. I’d have to go with George (although Kramer is a close second), mostly due to his habitual lying and the situations it gets him into.
Do you have a favorite movie line/quote?
“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need ‘roads’.” –Back to the Future
What is your favorite book?
So many books to choose from… but I’d have to go with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Such an epic adventure.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I really enjoy woodworking, though I haven’t done much lately because the price of wood makes me cry.
What is something people may not know about you? Do you have a secret talent?
I don’t… I’m a pretty lame dude.
What is your greatest fear?
That my beard stops growing and never fills in.
Where is your favorite place to be?
I love being at home with my family.
If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?
How much are we talking?! Honestly, I’d probably deposit it in the bank, make some investments, and go back to work.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I would love to learn to play the banjo!
Who inspires you?
My dad and my grandfather. Two of the hardest working I’ve ever known.
What music genre do you like to listen to?
I listen to just about everything. I prefer 80s-era rock and country.
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Four-way, dry, with onions.
What was the first concert you ever attended?
Zac Brown Band back when they were first getting started. Also, it was the last concert I ever attended. Not much of a concert guy.
Dog or cat person?
Dogs all the way. We currently have two. Rudy, a two-year-old chocolate lab mix, and Love, a one-and-a-half-year-old mix with an enormous underbite.

Where are you from?
Julian, West Virginia–a very small town in the southern coalfields of West Virginia where it takes 45 minutes to get to Walmart.
